Lion King: Tim Rice

Few West End musicals match Disney's The Lion King for its visual drama. The breathtaking stage sets that burst into life with imagery and clever lighting, are only surpassed by the spectacular costumes that splash colour around the stage. Some 40 actors leap and whirl, and use their costumes to tell a compelling story, which is driven along by a score of powerful songs from Elton John and Tim Rice. Without a doubt, this is an epic musical that captures the imagination, and thrills generations of adults and children alike.

Would you believe The Lion King was never intended to be a musical? It's true. The first concept was done in National Geographic and Wild Kingdom style. Credit Tim Rice for making the suggestion and bringing in Elton John to create the music.

Did the Disney studio steal Kimba The White Lion and rework it as their "original story", The Lion King? They certainly give that impression with their corporate stance ("we never heard of Tezuka nor Kimba until after The Lion King was released"). And why would they have filed suit to try to prevent the showing of Tezuka Productions' 1997 Jungle Emperor Leo movie at the 1998 Toronto FantAsia Film Festival? (Jungle Emperor was the original title for Kimba The White Lion.) It seems quite simple; Kimba had been kept out of sight in North America for 20 years by that time.

In 1994, The Walt Disney Company released what would be come its most successful animated feature film, The Lion King. At the time, few imagined it would touch the lives of so many people or become so wildly successful. Over the last decade of its legacy, the film has given birth to endless inspiration for those who have come to enjoy it as the best animated film ever made. So much, in fact, that some decide to give a little something back to those who enjoy it so, often through web sites such as this one.
