Linkin Park is a rock band from Agoura Hills, California. Forming in 1996, the band had since sold more than forty million albums and won two Grammys.[1][2][3] With their debut album, Hybrid Theory, they achieved mainstream success; the album certifying Diamond from the RIAA.[4] Their following studio album, Meteora, continued the band's success, topping the Billboard 200’s album charts in 2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charity work around the world.[5]

Following Meteora's success, Linkin Park postponed their work on a new album for the next several years. Instead, the band continued touring and working on several side projects. In 2004, Linkin Park started working with Jay-Z to produce another remix release, entitled Collision Course. The album featured intermixed lyrics and tracks from both artists’ backgrounds. The album debuted in November 2004. Mike Shinoda, the band’s vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist... formed a new group, Fort Minor, as a side project.

The genesis of Linkin Park occurred among 3 Los Angeles high school friends, vocalist Mike Shinoda, guitarist Brad Delson, and drummer Rob Bourdon. The trio recruited DJ Joe Hahn, bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell, and vocalist Mark Wakefield to form the group Xero. However, tensions surfaced when the group failed to secure a record deal. Wakefield left in frustration. Forced to recruit another vocalist, the band settled on Chester Bennington, formerly of the group Grey Daze. Bennington suggested a name change and the band became Linkin Park.

Linkin Park returned to the recording studios in 2006 to work on new material. To produce the album, the band chose popular producer Rick Rubin. Despite initially stating the album would debut sometime in 2006, the album was pushed off to 2007.[35] The band had recorded thirty to fifty songs in August 2006, when Shinoda stated the album was halfway completed.[36] Bennington later added that the new album would stray away from their previous nu metal sound.[37] Warner Bros. Records officially announced that the band’s third studio album, entitled Minutes to Midnight, would be released on May 15, 2007 in the United States.[38] After spending fourteen months working on the album, the band opted to further refine their album by removing five of the original seventeen tracks.[35] Minutes to Midnight sold over 600,000 copies in its first week, making it one of the most successful debut week albums in recent years. The album ... captured the top spot on the Billboard Charts.[11]
