There are two tracks in this major, Track A (designed to give students familiarity with a broad range of subject areas in linguistics), and Track B (particularly appropriate for students planning to go on to graduate school). In addition, undergraduates have the option of working out with the undergraduate advisor a variant tailored to their particular needs.

On the brighter side, it means Noam Chomsky can nominate people - though I’m not sure if linguistics fits under this criteria. He is... an “Institute Professor”, which is MIT’s equivalent of “University Professor”.

Students learn linguistics at Swarthmore through interacting with the information and each other. Coursework and problem sets challenge students to develop their own insights and construct arguments supporting their claims. Linguistics has a certain (mostly undeserved) reputation as being difficult, so many Linguistics concentrators report that people often perceive them as very smart, simply because these people know almost nothing about Linguistics. This can occasionally be embarrassing.

Indian linguistics maintained a high level for several centuries; Patanjali in the 2nd Century BC still actively criticizes Panini. In the later centuries BC... Panini's grammar came to be seen as prescriptive, and commentators came to be fully dependent on it. Bhartrihari (c. 450 – 510) theorized the act of speech as being made up of four stages: first, conceptualization of an idea, second, its verbalization and sequencing and third, delivery of speech into atmospheric air, all these by the speaker and last, the comprehension of speech by the listener, the interpreter.
