Washington DC tours There are some fun tidbits of trivia about the Lincoln memorial. On the back of Lincoln's head is rumored to be an outline of the face of Robert E. Lee, his enemy during the Civil War. Take a look and see what you think! The hands of Lincoln's statue has one hand clenched, and the other open. It is thought that the sculptor, Chester French, who had a hearing-impaired daughter, carved Lincoln's hands to sign the president's initials, "A" and "L", in American Sign Language.

On Memorial Day, May 30, 1922, the building was dedicated, 57 years after Lincoln died. About 50,000 people attended the ceremonies, including hundreds of Civil War veterans and Robert Todd Lincoln, the president's only surviving son. The main speakers were President Warren Harding, former President William Howard Taft, and Dr. Robert Moton, principal of the Tuskegee Institute, who delivered the keynote address.
Daniel Chester French sculpture inside the Lincoln Memorial The way that Lincoln is built is a tribute to the way in which he lived his life. When viewed from the left, Lincoln is shown from the left, his lips are pressed together, his hand is clenched into a fist, and he appears to be about to stand. This image is referred to as "Lincoln at War". When viewed from the other side, though, Lincoln's face is relaxed, his hand rests peacfully on the arm of his seat, and his leg is stretched out comfortably. This view is known as "Lincoln at Peace."
This book examines not only the rather lengthy story of Lincoln's memorial, but ... the man and his presidency. Always first or second on historians' lists of Greatest U.S. Presidents, Lincoln is an admirable study. From his poor, frontier childhood; to becoming the proud and powerful man who led a nation through a terrible war, wrote two of the most famous speeches in U.S. history and the Emancipation Proclamationñthere is much to be learned.
The Gathering of Eagles was formed by Vietnam veterans to protect the Vietnam Veterans Memorial from being desecrated as the Capitol was at an antiwar march last month. While there is no way to accurately gauge attendance, it is expected that thousands of veterans, their families and other patriotic Americans will gather that day to protect The Wall and other war memorials.
