Ford told workers on Monday at the Wixom assembly plant that LS production is ending early next year, leaving the plant to build the Town Car and the Ford GT.

It's safe to say that the Lincoln LS is as close to a European-style sports sedan as an American company has ever created. Both the LS6 (V-6) and the LS8 (V-8) have the firm road feel of a Mercedes-Benz, the restrained sculpting of a BMW and, at highway speeds, the supremely quiet cabin of a Volvo or Audi sedan.

A few other changes occurred before the Lincoln LS was discontinued. Satellite radio was added as a dealer-installed option for 2004, and Lincoln made additional improvements to the automatic transmission to improve shift quality. For the final year, the V6 version was dropped from the LS lineup.

Driving the Lincoln LS is more than pleasant. It's quiet and offers an excellent balance of crisp handling and a smooth ride. The suspension is tuned more like a Mercedes than a Lincoln. In many situations, it feels as good as a European sedan.
