Lincoln originally intended to designate LS models as "LS6" and "LS8", depending on the engine size option. Toyota threatened a trademark infringement lawsuit, due to the similar naming scheme used on the Lexus LS. Lincoln settled on designating the cars as "LS V6" and "LS V8".

Even though, the Lincoln LS shares a rear-wheel-drive platform with the British-built S-Type Jaguar, it totally differs in styling and equipment. The only V8 Sport model that is available for 2006 comes with a 280-hp V8, 5-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift capability, ABS, and traction control. Side curtain-type airbags and extended rear parking assist are optional features. The automatic transmission was modified to produce smoother shifts. The much-simplified LS have some distinct design elements like a chrome grille with body-colored surround, round fog lamps and body-colored rear license-plate trim.

In case you Gen Y Botherers never clocked the whole "Hot-Rod Lincoln" thing, nail the LS' throttle. A bracing blast of torque and horsepower establish a welcome link to the brand's muscle car past. The LS' fierce intake growl adds to the drama. While there are plenty of more accelerative six-pots out there, a luxury whip with a 280-horse 3.9-liter V8 that wafts to sixty in 6.5 seconds in the great American style works for me. OK, that's almost two seconds slower than a V8-powered 5-Series, but you can console yourself with a lot of champagne with the money saved.

A midsize entry-luxury sedan, the Lincoln LS was produced for the 2000-'06 model years. Originally, the LS was available in just two trim levels differentiated by the engine equipped. The Lincoln LS V8 came with a 252-horsepower, 3.9-liter engine that moved the sedan from zero to 60 in 7.5 seconds. A five-speed automatic transmission was standard.
