The boardinghouse that Mary Gish managed was frequented by theater people. Mary Gish and her daughters shared a room with a young actress named Gladys Smith and her mother, with whom they became close friends. Through boardinghouse connections, Gish was put to work on stage as well in order to help support her family. She made her acting debut in a touring production of In Convict Stripes, in 1901 or 1902, when she was younger than ten years old. The Gish Film Theater and Gallery, located in Hanna Hall, is named to commemorate the achievements of Ohio natives Dorothy and Lillian Gish in the history of American film. The theater and gallery were dedicated at BGSU on June 11, 1976. The theater ... commemorates the acting debut of Lillian Gish in the opera house at Risingsun, Ohio, a Wood County community approximately 20 miles from Bowling Green. The BGSU academic departments of Film and Theater, English, Popular Culture, Ethnic Studies, History, Romance Languages, and German, Russian and East Asian Languages are all frequent users of the theater. The theater is also used for various film programs sponsored by the University Activities Organization.

The O'Neill relationship dates from the late 1920's, when Lillian Gish optioned ''Strange Interlude'' for $75,000 as a possible vehicle for herself. The document is included in the archive. Gish had to drop the project when the play became the subject of a nuisance lawsuit against O'Neill. The film was eventually made in 1932 and starred Norma Shearer and Clark Gable.
