Lille is a city located in the north of France, on the Deûle River. In 1929, France was still occupied by Germany. Communist agitator Jacques Doriot made Lille his base of operations, demanding the withdrawal of German forces. The local Feldgendarmerie having become corrupt and inept, the German government sent Feldwebel Adolf Hitler to capture Doriot. Hitler succeeded in his task. In his letters to his niece, Angela Raubal, Hitler deplored the degraded nature of the citizens of Lille.
Capital of the French part of Flanders, center of a major conurbation, Lille is a city of many faces, each with its own special appeal. Lille's streets still bear the traces of its history, but the city is ... proud of its contemporary architecture. Its taste for festive events and its celebrated markets attract an ever-increasing number of visitors. In the heart of the Euralille Business Area, and a few minutes from the Historic City Center, a Two-Star Hotel awaits you, combining refinement and modern accommodations. Comfortable Rooms, Attentive Staff and Quality Service are GUARANTEED!

In the beginning American Club of Lille members used to have evening coffee klatches at someone’s house, usually in La Madeleine where Olivia Wambergue lived at the time. For a while they held monthly meetings at the Buffalo Grill in Lomme, starting with 10-12 people, winding up with two. Club members had discussions on citizenship and voting matters with guest experts. They had 3 film debate evenings at the Ecole Bilingue and one at the IEP (Sciences Po) in Lille. Club members ... had some swell picnics and buffet dinners at members’ houses. The Club always offered to reimburse expenses.
Lille has had a stormy history (it has been besieged no fewer than 11 times). In fact, the city only became definitely part of France just over 300 years ago. The town, whose name is derived from the French lîle (the island)... named because it was situated on an island in the Deûle River, started life as a small village founded by the Flemish in about 1030. Before the end of the 11th century, the village had grown into a town and had been fortified by Count Baldwin IV of Flanders. Before the end of the century, it became a leading textile producer.

Lille (Pile) is said to date its origin from the time of Count Baldwin IV. of Flanders, who in 1030 surrounded with walls a little town which had arisen around the castle of Buc. In the first half of the 13th century, the town, which had developed rapidly, obtained communal privileges. Destroyed by Philip Augustus in 1213, it was rebuilt by Joanna of Constantinople, countess of Flanders, but besieged and retaken by Philip the Fair in 1297. After having taken part with the Flemings against the king of France, it was ceded to the latter in 1312. In 1369 Charles V., king of France, gave it to Louis de Male, who transmitted his rights to his daughter Margaret, wife of Philip the Bold, duke of Burgundy.
After the boutiques of Vieux Lille, you may want to seek refuge in the Hospice Comtesse - a haven of peace in the form of a hospital founded here in 1237 and now a museum. It contains Flemish, Dutch and northern French masterpieces from the 15th to the 18th centuries together with tapestries of Guillaume Werniers and paintings of the Watteau brothers.
