lilwayne.jpg With no fanfare and a Christmas release date, Lil Wayne's five-song, digital-only EP The Leak sold 2,400 copies during its first week in e-stores. It missed the digital-sales chart; the No. 50 album on that list, the High School Musical soundtrack, sold 3,300 copies. [XXL]

Wayne's Wifey Lil Wayne possesses an unquantifiable charisma. And he's the perfect artist to own this time, when album sales are bunk and only sheer bombast and constant reinvention reign supreme. He's a symbiote attached to this rapidly changing game - as it moves, he moves. Since the formal announcement of his dominance - his fourth album, Tha Carter (Cash Money, 2004) - no MC has been so fierce, so alluring, so present.

The solo album went double platinum, peaking at number three on Billboard's album chart and spawning a Top Ten hit with the title track. Lil Wayne's second album, Lights Out (2000), failed to match the success of its predecessor, nor did 500 Degreez (2002), his third album. By this point in time, Lil Wayne was the only remaining Hot Boy on Cash Money -- all other members had defected -- and the future didn't seem promising for him or the label. Consequently, he purportedly scrapped work on his fourth album and instead released the recordings as an underground mixtape, Da Drought (2003), his first of many to follow.
