- Registry -- Cord Blood Registry
Cord Blood Registry is a registered trademark of Cbr Systems, Inc., the leader in newborn stem cell processing and cryopreservation for familial use in transplantation and regenerative medicine. The stem cells preserved by CBR are collected immediately after the birth of a newborn and are then available to be used in treatments for the newborn, siblings, and any compatible genetic family member. Once transplanted, the cells have the potential to repair damaged or diseased tissues with little risk of rejection and increased long-term survival. The company's research and development is focused on advancing the collection, processing, and storage methods to optimize quality and cell yield. Additionally, CBR facilitates collection of donated research samples, available for the nearly 200 research programs worldwide that are focused on stem cell expansion and cell-based therapies. For more information, visit http://www.cordblood.com/ , or call 1-888-CORD BLOOD. - Missouri -- Missouri School
The University of Missouri School of Medicine has improved health, education and research in Missouri for more than 160 years. MU physicians treat patients from every county in the state, and MU is a primary provider of training for all physicians in Missouri. The School of Medicine's more than 600 faculty physicians and scientists educate approximately 1,000 medical students, residents, fellows and other students seeking advanced degrees. Their research is focused on potentially lifesaving discoveries that address the most prevalent health problems. - Urinalysis
Urinalysis is the chemical analysis of a subject's urine. It has been used by police agencies in DUI investigations as a means of determining a driver's blood-alcohol level since long before breath testing devices came on the scene. It is still used in a few jurisdictions, usually as an alternative to breath or blood analysis, but it is today probably the least commonly encountered of the DUI test procedures. This is true for two reasons. First, taking a urine sample from a drunk driving arrestee is time consuming and, frankly, a distasteful job for the police officer. In jurisdictions requiring the sample to be taken at a hospital or laboratory rather than by the officer at the station, it involves considerably more time and trouble than a quick, on-the-spot breath test. - Cape Cod National Seashore -- Atlantic Ocean
Although the kettle ponds within Cape Cod National Seashore are within 2.5 km of the ocean and have been subjected to thousands of years of salt spray, they remain low in dissolved salts. Ponds are flushed out by inflowing and outflowing groundwater, which prevents salts from accumulating. - Fiorinal -- Butalbital Fiorinal
Fiorinal is a barbiturate sedative (butalbital) mixed with aspirin and caffeine. This non-narcotic pain medication and relaxant is often prescribed for tension headaches caused by contractions of the muscles in the neck and shoulder area, and migraine headaches. If you find yourself needing to use Fiorinal twice a week or more on a regular basis, speak with your doctor about headache reduction therapy. Frequent use of Fiorinal may cause rebound headaches, particularly for migraine sufferers. - Petfinder
Petfinder.com is an online, searchable database of animals that need permanent homes. A directory of over 10,500 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the USA, Canada and Mexico, the organization's technology helps users search adoptable pets in their area that fit their family's individual needs and preferences. In addition, Petfinder.com offers a wealth of knowledge about how to select the most compatible pet for your home and how to raise and care for an animal. Petfinder.com is free to use. Animal shelters and placement groups can register to join Petfinder.com online and can start entering pets the same day. - Drugs -- Patients
Biotechnology drugs accounted for 18 percent of all drug expenditures at Kaiser Permanente in 2005. Oncology, rheumatology, neurology, genetics, endocrinology and dermatology are among the clinical areas particularly affected by the introduction of expensive new therapies. "These ultra-expensive drugs can offer new therapy options to physicians treating difficult diseases. However, it is crucial to get these valuable new treatments to the right patients, while minimizing the safety risks that come with them," stated Douglas Monroe, lead author and Project Manager, Biotechnology, Emerging Technology, and Specialty Pharmacy, Kaiser Permanente. "Our unique ability to draw upon the expertise and experience of a large group of physician specialists, combined with the power to measure clinical outcomes across a large number of patients, then to be able to feed that information back to prescribers gives us a tremendous advantage in figuring out how to best use these new drugs." - Cirrhosis -- United States
Statistics for the 10% sample of mortality reported by NCHS for 1981-1983... appear to indicate a further decline in liver cirrhosis mortality (2,3) rather than stabilization. The overall age-adjusted death rates from cirrhosis were 11.4/100,000, 10.4/100,000, and 10.4/100,000 based on the mortality sample for 1981, 1982, and 1983, respectively. This compared with 12.1/100,000 in 1979 and 12.2/100,000 in 1980. This comparison must, however, be viewed with caution. First, estimates from the 10% sample may differ from the final mortality statistics. In addition, unlike those for 1950 through 1980, the population figures used in calculating rates for 1981-1983 are based on postcensal extrapolation rather than intercensal estimation. - Low Blood Sugar -- Hypoglycemia
When BYETTA is used with a medicine that contains a sulfonylurea, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is a possible side effect. To reduce this possibility, the dose of sulfonylurea medicine may need to be reduced while using BYETTA. Other common side effects with BYETTA include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, feeling jittery, and acid stomach. Nausea is most common when first starting BYETTA, but decreases over time in most patients. BYETTA may reduce appetite, the amount of food eaten, and body weight. No changes in dose are needed for these side effects. - Missy
Missy christened the Missyplicity cloning project, (from which came Operation Copycat), when her DNA was taken to be used to produce the first cloned puppy. However canine cloning proved more difficult to do than feline. The announcement of the successful cat cloning back in December 2001 was delayed until DNA analysis could be performed to confirm genetic identity and was press released by Texas A&M University, where the research was carried out, in May.
