To expand its gas production, marketing, and distribution, Libya is looking to foreign participation and investment. In recent years large new discoveries have been made in the Ghadames and el-Bouri fields, as well as in the Sirte basin. Libyan natural gas development projects currently underway include as-Sarah and Nahoora, Faregh, Wafa, offshore block NC-41, Abu-Attifel, Intisar, and block NC-98.

Before gaining its independence in 1951, Libya was a country of regionalism and tribes. In fact, it wasn’t until the 20th century when the country was joined under a coherent political unit. One reason for this lack of cohesion for so long is the topography of the country. Much of Libya is covered by desert, which separates many of the tribal regions.

Libya political map The country of Libya has very limited natural fresh water resources. However, the Great Manmade River Project (the largest water development plan in the world) is being built to transfer water to the coastal cities from large aquifers under the Sahara. Another environmental issue for Libya is desertification.

Sunday, 29 April, 2007: Libya is looking for a solution to the trial of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for HIV infection, Algerian law expert Saad Djebbar said. An end to the trial could be expected any minute, he said. Europe and the int'l community should undertake a positive step to trigger Libya’s reaction. The setting up of a modern medical centre aiding the AIDS victim in Libya could help, Djebbar said as quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA. The nurses could expect a prison sentence or another smaller verdict in place of the death sentences. [Sofia Echo]
According to the IAEA director general's report of February 2004, "[i]n July 1995, Libya made a strategic decision to reinvigorate its nuclear activities" including gas centrifuge uranium enrichment. In 1997, foreign manufacturers, including Pakistan, provided 20 pre-assembled L-1 centrifuges[31] and components for an additional 200 L-1 centrifuges and related parts. One of the 20 pre-assembled rotors was used to install a completed single centrifuge at the Al Hashan site, which was first successfully tested in October 2000. Libya reported to the IAEA that no nuclear material had been used during tests on L-1 centrifuges.[32]
