Mr Ban told a press conference yesterday that "Libya has been playing a positive role on Darfur", including hosting two meetings this year which defined a road-map for peace talks. This put pressure on the rival rebel movements to coordinate their positions and come up with a common platform. The main issue which destroyed last year's deal was the complaint of too little compensation for the millions of internally displaced people.

Today’s Libya has over 5 million citizens, most of them of Arab descent. The cities of Libya are fairly modern, but away from the cities, tribalism is still the rule. The people of Libya adhere to Muslim traditions.
Flag of Libya After the Second World War, Libya emerged as an independent kingdom led by H.M. King Idris. Colonel Qaddafi and his Colonel colleagues ousted the King in the Green Revolution of 1969. The Libyan people had grewn weary of the despotic King and his tyrannic style of rule and wanted to give a chance to a league of despotic colonels and their tyrannic style of rule. History has shown that Libyans are more fond of a Revolutionary military dictatorship than a Royal military dictatorship.
The total number of landmine casualties in Libya is not known. Reports compiled by the Libyan police indicate that 11,845 landmine casualties were recorded between 1940 and 1995, including 6,749 people killed and 5,096 injured.[34] The Libyan Jihad Center for Historical Studies reports higher statistics: 12,258 mine casualties, including 3,874 people killed and 8,384 injured, between 1952 and 1975.[35]

For most of their history, the peoples of Libya have been subjected to varying degrees of foreign control. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals, and Byzantines ruled all or parts of Libya. Although the Greeks and Romans left impressive ruins at Cyrene, Leptis Magna, and Sabratha, little else remains today to testify to the presence of these ancient cultures.
