Libya: Mediterranean Sea
built 644 days ago
On the southernmost shores of the Mediterranean and on one of the gateways to the great Sahara, Libya is a country with a rich heritage. Since the emergence of mankind, various cultures and civilisations have flourished here.
In turn, the BBC's Marcus notes, the latest news about Libya "will only bolster those in Washington...who argue that the Bush administration should be more willing to explore whether direct talks with Tehran are possible." He added, referring to Bush's handling of Iran: "If you want diplomatic happy endings, then megaphone diplomacy and the glare of the media spotlight probably have to take a back seat."

The petroleum-rich country of Libya lies in northern Africa along the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Libya blends its role as one of the world's most important producers of petroleum with a traditional Arab society based on the Islamic religion.

The Sahara, a vast North African desert, covers most of Libya. Much of the country’s land consists of barren, rock-strewn plains and sand sea. Two small areas of hills rise in the northwest and northeast, and the Tibesti massif rises near the southern border. There are no permanent rivers or streams in Libya. The coastline is indented near the center by the Gulf of Sidra, where barren desert reaches the Mediterranean Sea.
