The first libraries were composed for the most part of unpublished records, a particular type of library called archives. Archaeological findings from the ancient city-states of Sumer have revealed temple rooms full of clay tablets in cuneiform script. These archives were made up almost completely of the records of commercial transactions or inventories, with only a few documents touching theological matters, historical records or legends. Things were much the same in the government and temple records on papyrus of Ancient Egypt.
"Far from hurting American libraries, the Internet has actually helped to spur more people to use their local libraries because it has increased our hunger for knowledge and information," said Loriene Roy, president-elect of the American Library Association. According the ALA report, virtually every library in the United States -- 99 percent -- provides free public computer access to the Internet, a four-fold increase in the percentage of libraries providing such free access over the last decade. By comparison, Roy pointed to another study released in March showing that only 69 percent of U.S. households have Internet access.

A linker may work on specific types of object files, and ... require specific (compatible) types of libraries. Collecting object files into a static library may ease their distribution and use. A client, either a program or a library subroutine, accesses a library object by referencing just its name. The linking process resolves references by searching the libraries in the order given. Usually, it is not considered an error if a name can be found multiple times in a given set of libraries.
The USO currently operates 124 centers around the world, providing free e- mail and Internet access, international phone cards, libraries, and travel assistance. USO affiliates in the United States provide support to service members as well as their families left behind. USO centers in Europe provide support to troops deploying to the Persian Gulf and the wounded returning to the United States for treatment.
Roy pointed to the report's findings from studies in Florida and Ohio that provide a compelling case for the return on public investment in libraries. Every dollar of public support spent on Florida's public libraries produced an increase of $9.08 in gross regional product and an increase of $12.66 in total state wages. A similar study of nine public library systems in southwestern Ohio reported an annual economic impact nearly four times the amount invested
