Libraries inform their users of what materials are available in their collections and how to access that information. Before the computer age, this was accomplished by the card catalog — a cabinet containing many drawers filled with index cards that identified books and other materials. In a large library, the card catalog often filled a large room. The emergence of the Internet... has led to the adoption of electronic catalog databases (often referred to as "webcats" or as OPACs, for "online public access catalog"), which allow users to search the library's holdings from any location with Internet access. This style of catalog maintenance is compatible with new types of libraries, such as digital libraries and distributed libraries, as well as older libraries that have been retrofitted. Electronic catalog databases are disfavored by some who believe that the old card catalog system was both easier to navigate and allowed retention of information, by writing directly on the cards, that is lost in the electronic systems.

Altair continues to tightly integrate PBS Professional with industry standard MPI libraries. In earlier releases, PBS Professional tightly integrated with LAM 7.0, MPICH and IBM POE. This time, PBS Professional tightly integrates with LAM-MPI 6.5.9 and HP's MPI libraries. The result is improved system resiliency under a variety of system failure modes, as well as enhanced accounting accuracy. Additionally, systems administrators are relieved of the need to create and maintain epilogue scripts to clean up after aborted MPI jobs.

[I]n practice, the shared libraries on most systems do not change often. Therefore, it is possible to compute a likely load address for every shared library on the system before it is needed, and store that information in the libraries and executables. If every shared library that is loaded has undergone this process, then each will load at their predetermined addresses, which speeds up the process of dynamic linking. This optimization is known as prebinding in Mac OS X and prelinking in Linux. Disadvantages of this technique include the time required to precompute these addresses every time the shared libraries change, the inability to use address space layout randomization, and the requirement of sufficient virtual address space for use (a problem that will be alleviated by the adoption of 64-bit architectures, at least for the time being).

OpenStep used a more flexible system, collecting a list of libraries from a number of known locations (similar to the PATH concept) when the system first starts. Moving libraries around causes no problems at all, although there is a time cost when first starting the system.
