Lexapro: Patients
built 644 days ago
Lexapro is an antidepressant that is the newest member of the family of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Lexapro was developed by isolating a part of the CELEXATM (citalopram HBr) molecule, known as an isomer. As a result, Lexapro is able to provide effective and well-tolerated therapy for depressed patients.

Pregnancy and Nursing Mothers: The safety of Lexapro during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. Therefore, Lexapro should not be used during pregnancy, unless, in the opinion of the physician, the expected benefits to the patient markedly outweigh the possible hazards to the fetus. Lexapro is excreted in human milk. Lexapro should not be administered to nursing mothers unless, in the opinion of the treating physician, the expected benefits to the patient markedly outweigh the possible hazards to the child.

The efficacy of Lexapro in the long-term treatment of GAD, that is, for more than 8 weeks, has not been systematically evaluated in controlled trials. The physician who elects to use Lexapro for extended periods should periodically re-evaluate the long-term usefulness of the drug for the individual patient.

Maintenance therapy with the antidepressant Lexapro reduces the risk for recurrent depression. Dr. Susan G. Kornstein from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, investigated the preventive effect of Lexapro maintenance treatment in 139 patients who had responded to treatment with another similar antidepressant and maintained that response when switched to Lexapro for continuation therapy. Some patients with a major depressive episode need acute phase treatment to get their symptoms into remission, followed by continuation phase treatment to prevent that episode from returning (which would be called a relapse). Time to recurrence of depression in the current study was significantly longer for Lexapro-treated patients -- on average 252 days with Lexapro versus 130 days with placebo. It is possible that other SSRI antidepressants or natural supplements could be as effective as Lexapro for maintenance treatment. Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, November 2006.
