Escitalopram Oxalate (Lexapro™) is a medicine for depression and other related problems. Lexapro is a potent selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Lexapro (escitalopram) is the active isomer of the antidepressant drug Celexa (citalopram).

Lexapro works by boosting levels of serotonin, one of the chief chemical messengers in the brain. The drug is a close chemical cousin of the antidepressant medication Celexa. Other antidepressants that work by raising serotonin levels include Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft.

Lexapro is an antidepressant medication used for treating depression in adults. Lexapro belongs to a group of antidepressant drugs called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor), which are thought to work by increasing the amount of serotonin (a chemical involved in communication between nerve cells) available to the brain, so that it comes back to a normal level. Low levels of serotonin are believed to be associated with mood disorders, and high levels of serotonin seem to have an antidepressant effect.

Lexapro is marketed by Forest Laboratories, the same company that sells celexa. Forest was a small drug manufacturer before celexa, but now is a major player in the extremely lucrative antidepressant marketplace.
