Lev Leviev: New York
built 630 days ago
Africa Israel USA, a unit of Africa Israel Investments Ltd. of which Mr. Leviev is chairman, paid $525 million to scoop up the landmark building that has served as the headquarters for New York Times Co. for the past 94 years. Tishman Speyer, the closely held New York real-estate giant, purchased the building from the newspaper company in 2004 for $175 million. Because of the red-hot Manhattan real-estate market, Tishman was able to sell the building for triple what it paid the Times for it only three years ago.

The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth ... reported on January 28, 2004 that Leviev is a primary donor to the Israeli organization the Land Redemption Fund, which allegedly uses fraud and intimidation to extort land from Palestinian farmers for Israeli settlement. While Leviev donates to UNICEF and OXFAM, 50% of families in the farming village of Jayyous are now on food aid, according to the Financial Times, because they are being choked by Leviev’s expansion of the all-Jewish settlement of Zufim. Leveiv and Boymlegreen are building the settlement of Mattityahu East on the village of Bil’in’s land. Bil’in has earned international acclaim for its three year campaign of nonviolent protest against the construction of settlements and Israel’s wall on their farmland.

A deeply religious man, Leviev made the news several years ago when he purchased the controlling interest in the exclusive Ramat Aviv Shopping Mall, and almost immediately prevented the multi-screen cinema there from being open on Shabbat and Jewish religious holidays. Although the cinema later opened its doors during Jewish holy days, Leviev retaliated by announcing that he would remove the cinema entirely from the mall. Leviev is deeply involved in the Chabad religious movement, and has made large donations to the Chabad Movement in both Israel and abroad. He was a personal friend of the late Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Schneerson, who has been refereed by many as the Jewish “Meshiach” or Messiah.
