- Santa Claus
Years of research confirmed that initial doubt: Santa Claus is an Americanization, all right, but not of a Catholic Saint. . . Despite a century of repetition, this story is simply untrue. . . (Siefker, Phyllis. Santa Claus, Last of the Wild Men: The Origins and Evolution of Saint Nicholas. Jefferson: McFarland & Company, Inc., 1997, pp. 5,7) - Christmas Traditions -- Santa Claus
Some Christmas traditions come from religious teachings while others come from different cultures. There are Christmas traditions that are special to each individual family, and some of these traditions might have been started for purely commercial reasons. There are traditions that vary from country to country. Some of these variations are slight while others may be quite different. Santa Claus might be a tradition in one country while a similar character might have a completely different name and appearance in another country. This character usually has something to do with bringing gifts to small children so the appearance and name are not as important as the duties of this usually jolly man. - Fran Allison -- Shows
After four years of teaching, Fran was ready for a change. She had always had a love of singing and landed a job at a Waterloo station. While there she sang, did commercials, cooking shows, just about anything the little station threw at her. One thing led to another and she soon found herself auditioning in Chicago for Don McNeil's popular "Breakfast Club" program. Although originally signed as a vocalist, Fran became famous for her "Aunt Fanny" character which she had perfected while still in Iowa. Here she is, as Aunt Fanny with show host Don McNeil. - Christmas -- Christmas Carol

Thomas Nast was a nineteenth-century caricaturist and editorial cartoonist and is considered to be the father of American political cartooning. Born in Germany, he came to New York in 1846. He began work for Harper's Weekly, and in 1860 went to England for the New York Illustrated News to depict the prize fight between Heenan and Sayers, the famous boxers. He then joined Garibaldi in Italy as artist for the Illustrated London News. Also In the early 1860s, he married Sarah Edwards. He was well known in his time for his political cartoons supporting American Indians and Chinese Americans, and for advocating the abolition of slavery. - Jerry Colonna -- Bob Hope
Colonna's persona ... spawned nonsensical catch phrases that he would usually utter upon entrance. "Who's Yehudi?" and "Greetings Gates, Let's Operate!" were his two most famous, always eliciting laughter even without context, justification, or logic. Occasionally those on the Hope show would use such a line sans Colonna as an ad-lib - always a sure fire laugh. The "Who's Yehudi (sometimes spelled Yahoodi)" craze spawned a song that became a best selling 78 covered by several bands of the era. The phrase often popped up as a cheap laugh, although an esoteric reference today, in several cartoons and even a few movies like Topper Returns (1941) and Whistling in the Dark (1941). Friz Freleng's 1942 animated short Lights Fantastic features a "Yahoodi Cafe." Likewise, the Merrie Melody short Slightly Daffy (1944) has a Native American with a Mel Blanc voice shouting, "Greetings Gates, Let's Scalp-atate!" The Dell Comics adaptation of Carl Anderson's comic strip Henry featured a saxophone playing child named Yehudi. - Larry Flynt -- Hustler Style
