Lesotho: Lesotho Government
built 645 days ago
Lesotho held its first post-independence local government elections on April 30, 2005 using a quota system that reserved one-third of electoral divisions for women candidates. In these elections, 53% of the victorious candidates were women. Locally elected officials attended post-election training while regulations for local governance were drawn up by the National Assembly and infrastructure was created.

The Lesotho Government is a constitutional monarchy. The Prime Minister, Pakalitha Bethuel Mosisili, is head of government and has executive authority. The king serves a largely ceremonial function; he no longer possesses any executive authority and is proscribed from actively participating in political initiatives.
womensnet logo Lesotho consists of 65 political constituencies. For purposes of the health care delivery system the country is divided into 19 Health Service Areas. Except in two cases, each HSA is coordinated by a general hospital. Nine of these hospitals belong to the government and eight to churches under the Christian Health Association of Lesotho (CHAL).
Lesotho is leading from the top in the struggle for people to know their status. The Prime Minister was tested publicly in Qachas Neck earlier this year, taking a step that few leaders in this region have made. And now government health officials are going door to door to test the people of Lesotho in an effort to achieve universal testing.

Lesotho Basutoland was renamed the Kingdom of Lesotho upon independence from the UK in 1966. The Basuto National Party ruled for the first two decades. King MOSHOESHOE was exiled in 1990, but returned to Lesotho in 1992 and reinstated in 1995. Constitutional government was restored in 1993 after 7 years of military rule. In 1998, violent protests and a military mutiny following a contentious election prompted a brief but bloody intervention by South African and Botswanan military forces under the aegis of the Southern African Development Community. Constitutional reforms have since restored political stability; peaceful parliamentary elections were held in 2002.
