Les Misérables (... known as Les Mis) is a musical composed in 1980 by French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg on a libretto by Alain Boublil. The Broadway production of Les Mis opened on 3/12/87 and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, winning including Best Musical and Best Original Score, and ran until 2003. A fully brand new and re-orchestrated Broadway revival opened on 11/9/06 at the Broadhurst Theatre where it is still showing today. Les Misérables began a limited return to Broadway on November 9, 2006 at the Broadhurst Theatre. On December 19, 2006, it was announced that Les Misérables would extend its run until September 1, 2007. It was subsequently announced that the show would have an open-ended run rather than a set closing date. The original 2006 Broadway revival cast included Alexander Gemignani as Jean Valjean, Norm Lewis as Javert, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Fantine, Celia Keenan-Bolger as Éponine, Aaron Lazar as Enjolras, Adam Jacobs as Marius Pontmercy, Ali Ewoldt as Cosette, Gary Beach as Thénardier, and Jenny Galloway as Madame Thénardier.

There have been thirty-one cast recordings of the Les Miserables show, including the multi-platinum London cast album and the Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast, and complete symphonic albums. The video of the tenth Anniversary Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert has sold well over one million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling musical videos in the UK.

Les Misérables hit broadway in 1987 at the Broadway Theater and moved to the Imperial Theatre in 1990. It closed in 2003 after 6,680 shows. At the time it was the 2nd longest run for a Broadway musical. Since then The Phantom of the Opera has pushed it down to 3rd and moved Cats to 2nd.
