Leonardo DiCaprio was born in LA to parents George DiCaprio and Irmelin Indenbirken, who divorced when he was one year old. He lived mostly with his mother, although his father did play a role in his life. Leonardo's acting career began in 1989 when he was cast in the role of Garry Buckman on the TV version of the film Parenthood, where he met his longtime friend Tobey Maguire. However his breakthrough role came with his performance as Toby in This Boy's Life in 1993, as well as an Academy Award nominating role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape when he was only 19.
