AMES, Iowa – A genius well ahead of his time, Leonardo Da Vinci continues to inspire even 500 years after his remarkable life. His works are central to the best selling mystery novel The Da Vinci Code and its upcoming film adaptation, and his theories on friction are helping a group of scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory unlock the mystery of friction at the molecular level.

Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo Da Vinci (lay oh NAHR doe dah VEEN chee) was born in a small village called Vinci in the country of Italy. He was raised by his grandparents and even as a boy showed signs of genius. He could work hard mathematics problems and was a very good artist.

Leonardo Da Vinci's workshop, which was located in the Santissima Annunziata convent, in Florence, was discovered last month. It still had several of Da Vinci's frescoes on the walls. Some believe that Lisa Gherardini, the woman who was most likely the model for his painting, the Mona Lisa, worshipped at the convent.
