built 399 days ago
Leonardo Da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci was born on 15 April 1452 near the Tuscan town of Vinci, the illegitimate son of a local lawyer. He was apprenticed to the sculptor and painter Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence and in 1478 became an independent master. In about 1483, he moved to Milan to work for the ruling Sforza family as an engineer, sculptor, painter and architect. From 1495 to 1497 he produced a mural of 'The Last Supper' in the refectory of the Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan.

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. He painted the Mona Lisa with her mysterious smile and his legendary interpretation of the Last Supper. He didn’t have a lot of paintings because it took him so long to paint a "great" painting; he was very careful and precise, and was always looking over his shoulder to make sure no one was copying him. He even went so far as to "mirror write," writing everything backwards, which was easy for him since he was left-handed. He ... wrote backwards to prevent the powerful Roman Catholic Church from knowing about his scientific ideas. The Roman Church didn't approve of his thinking.

Leonardo da Vinci has left an astonishing legacy, not only in his painting and theses on painting but in the fields of design and engineering .... Works such as 'Mona Lisa' and 'St John the Baptist' show his skill most exquisitely. His work influenced the High Renaissance movement and particularly the two artists Michelangelo and Raphael. Although he did not leave a large body of work, his remarkable intellect and innovative ideas as well as the extraordinary technique he showed in his paintings and sculptures ensured his enduring reputation.

Researchers using three-dimensional technology to study the Mona Lisa say the woman depicted in Leonardo da Vinci's painting was either pregnant or had recently given birth when she sat for the painting. Laser scanning uncovered a fine gauze veil on her dress, typical for soon-to-be or new mothers at the time.
Leonardo da Vinci, the “Renaissance Man” and “Universal Genius” was an engineer, architect, inventor, sculptor, scientist, painter, and musician. He is considered one of the greatest painters, inventors, and creative thinkers the world has ever seen. It took him four years to paint the Mona Lisa and he invented the robot, the helicopter, the bicycle and the airplane.
