LENS will have two Target Moderator/Reflector (TMR) assemblies. One of these will be devoted to the production of cold neutrons for neutron scattering instruments that are primarily devoted to the study of large-scale structures in materials. This TMR employs a solid methane moderator held at temperatures lower than 10K and produces neutron beams that are colder than those available at typical neutron scattering facilities (a feature made possible by the relatively low radiation field existing near the LENS source). The second TMR assembly is devoted to the production of epithermal and fast neutrons for studies of neutron radiation effects in electronics and the development of advanced radiography capabilities.')" onmouseout="hideTip()" /> Target Assemblies

If the black outer rim on the lens base has a rim (meter coupling ridge), the lens is either AI or AIS. Note the presence of the "ears" in this picture - Series E and AF lenses don't have ears as is the case with some late production AIS lenses.
