The Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor lens offers Nikon's VR II vibration reduction system, which Nikon claims will allow up to four shots extra latitude in shutter speeds. The function operates in either normal or active modes, with the former compensating for regular camera shake (and detecting panning or tripod use automatically), while the latter compensates for stronger or more frequent shaking, such as when shooting photos on a moving vehicle. A silent wave motor helps speed up focusing while keeping audible noise levels down.
One of the surprises with the D70 announcement was that it could be purchased for US$300 more with a wide angle to telephoto zoom lens. Having a kit lens for consumer camera isn't new for Nikon, but a closer look at the specs showed this was an AF-S lens, an ED lens, and a DX lens. Ver-ry inderesding, as they used on Laugh In.

The rumours were circulating since some time already and today Nikon confirms the development of the Nikon D70, a new lens-interchangeable digital SLR camera with a popular price. A new DX Zoom-Nikkor lens is being developed at the same time as a best match for the D70, and both products are scheduled to go on sale in the spring of 2004.

The primary drawback to the lens is size. From the front flange of the camera, the lens will stick out 4.1 inches (105cm). And it adds 20.6 ounces (585g) to your carrying burden. Part of this is due to the metal barrel and other metal parts on the lens (read on…this is a good thing).

A common problem associated with using SLR cameras and large lenses is the weight of the SLR camera and lens being recklessly supported solely by the strap on the camera body. Always dangling down awkwardly, requiring the use of your hands trying to protect and stabilize your investment. Not to mention the excess stress on your neck and shoulders.
