Politically, Lenny is very active, working to improve the conditions that affect lives in Mecklenburg County and North Carolina. Lenny is an active member of the North Carolina Republican Party Executive Committee, the 12th District Republican Executive Committee, and the North Carolina New Majority Advisory Council. In March 2006,Lenny and Lannie McAllister participated as guests of US Senator Elizabeth Dole (NC) in the African-American Leadership Summit that was co-sponsored by US Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and Rick Santorum. This appearance came 18 months after Lenny appeared as an invited speaker before the Pennsylvania House of Representatives’ Judicial Committee concerning inconsistencies in child custody laws and court proceedings. By Wednesday morning, Hurricane Lenny was still over 80 miles south of Puerto Rico. The threat of Lenny moving directly over mainland Puerto Rico had diminished, but the effects of Lenny would still be substantial, particularly over the eastern half of the Island and ... over the island of Vieques. Rainbands were producing periods of very heavy rain and gusty winds. The surf was rising across the southern portion of the islands and the threat of coastal flooding was increasing. The rivers across Puerto Rico were near bank full from rain that fell during the previous days and even small amounts of rain were enough to cause river flooding.

A former student of Outward Bound and NOLS, he began working as a wilderness instructor, leading teenagers on educational, outdoor adventure trips throughout Yosemite National Park and California's Lost Coast.
