Legolas: Silvan Elves
built 260 days ago
Legolas is a very violent character in the movie. He's deadly, cold, and calculating when he confronts Orcs. But he ... has some interesting reactions. One of the odder parts of the movie occurs in the council of Elrond, when all the Elves and Dwarves start yelling at each other. There is nothing like this in the book. No Tolkien Elf or Dwarf would behave that way.

Legolas is an elf. He looks almost the same as a man, but he has pointy ears, and his eyes are slanted down a bit towards his nose. He has blond hair. He has strong muscles in his arms and legs, from climbing up his rope ladder several times every day, but his arms do not look particularly large. Like all elves, Legolas does not grow old. One day, he will surely die in an accident of some kind.

By the Nimrodel, Legolas sang of the Elf-maiden for whom the stream was named. He then began to climb one of the mallorn trees seeking shelter for his companions, but a voice speaking in Elvish from high in the branches stopped him. The Elves were border wardens of Lothlorien, and they had heard Legolas singing and recognized him as one of their Northern kindred. They asked him to climb up with Frodo to their flet.

At least, Legolas seems to refer to himself as a Silvan Elf. This is confusing, because his father Thranduil is elsewhere identified as one of the Sindar. The explanation lies in the the events following the arrival of Thranduil's father among the Silvan Elves of Greenwood the Great. That small band of Sindar merged themselves completely with the Silvan people of the Wood, leaving behind their Sindarin inheritance. That's why Legolas thinks of himself as a Silvan Elf, rather than one of the Sindar.

Legolas was most enthusiastic about coming to Lothlórien, describing it to the rest of the Company, and mourning the fact that it was winter and they could not witness it in the pinnacle of its glory. As they rested by the Nimrodel, Legolas told them tales of Lothlórien, and sang the Song of Nimrodel to them. Upon hearing the other Elves of Lórien, Legolas listened and responded in their own tongue. When Samwise queried as to what they were saying, Legolas slyly responded that they said he breathed so loud they could shoot him in the dark, horrifying Samwise until Legolas added that they need not fear them.

Could Legolas, or one of his hypothetical brothers, have been the original owner of the mithril shirt given to Bilbo in The Hobbit? After all, Mirkwood was the closest Elven realm to Erebor.
