"It's aggravating because of the traffic, trying to get through Lee Trevino and the traffic is congested, and you don't see anybody working, what's going on?" said Arturo Alvarez, from east El Paso.

The back surgery slowed -- but didn't destroy -- his game, Trevino winning once in each of the next four years (1976-79) and three times in 1980. The veteran of six Ryder Cup and five World Cup teams won his last major, the 1984 PGA, at 44.

Well one of the things that made Lee Trevino so famous was his ability to use every club in his bag. He was ... able to make his 7 or 4 iron play like any club in his bag, even his putter. So he might have a edge over the younger Jason, at a course like Coyote Hills, since it makes you use every club you own.

Lee was even more competitive than Tiger. Before the injury he was unstoppable under most conditions. The 'Merry Mex' persona on the course really hid a person driven to win as if his life depended on it. I always was uncomfortable watching him play because I felt that he took it too seriously and was not above engaging in gamesmenship to some extent. Whatever it took to win. It was like a steet fight with Lee, he was very grim underneath the laughter. Guess he didn't want to be a gravedigger.

Trevino played for the United States in the Ryder Cup six times (1969, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1981), and had an impressive 17-7-6 win-loss-half record. He ... served as team captain in 1985.
Trevino rewarded his fans with a scrambling finish reminiscent of the Palmer of old. Six strokes off the pace after the first round, Lee pitched in a 105-yd. sand wedge for an eagle and holed a 35-ft. birdie putt on the final day of play to tie 47-year-old Art Wall for first place. Then, on the first hole of the sudden-death playoff, he coolly knocked in a snaking 18-ft. birdie to win the $30,000 first prize.
