Lee Trevino was a caddie, driving-range handyman and municipal golf course "hustler" before he turned to professional golf. Once on the tour, he quickly established himself with a victory at the 1968 U.S. Open at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. He won his second U.S. Open in 1971 at the Merion Golf Clubs East Course in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Trevino ... has two British Open titles (1971, 1972) to go along with his 27 PGA Tour victories. A major back problem slowed him down from 1975 to 1977, but he regained his prominence by winning the 1984 PGA, his sixth major title. Since he turned 50 in 1989, Trevino has 29 Senior PGA Tour victories including the 1990 U.S. Senior Open.

Lee Trevino is a great character! Throughout all his competitive palying days he never once lost sight of the fact that golf was a 'game', and essentially an entertainment business - the game was for the fans. He grew up from humble beginnings and through all his riches he's still the same guy!

On the golf course, Lee Trevino has a signal for the media and fans alike. If the bill of his cap is tilted up, the door is open to conversation. However, if the hat is pulled down low and his eyes are not in view, the message is, ‘Do not disturb.’

After joining the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) tour in 1969, Trevino won many major tournaments, including the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA championship title. Trevino's happy-go-lucky, offbeat persona endeared him to many fans. An optimistic, resourceful man, Trevino grew up in poverty and did not begin competing as a professional until age 27.

Golfing legend Lee Trevino is born on this day in 1939, in Dallas, Texas. Growing up in a poor Mexican-American family, Trevino and his two sisters were raised by his mother and his grandfather in a house without electricity or indoor plumbing. Their home was located near a golf club, and little Lee began caddying for local players when he was eight years old. At 17, he joined the U.S. Marines, playing on their golf team during his four years of service. Upon his release, Trevino found work at golf clubs beginning in 1960. He ... earned money hustling other players who were deceived by his unorthodox self-taught style and short, flat swing.
