In the course of his career Trevino won the U.S. Open twice, the British Open twice, the Canadian Open three times, and the PGA title three times. He has ... won the Vardon Trophy, which is awarded to the player with the lowest average score per round, five times. He was named PGA Player of the Year and the Associated Press and Sports Illustrated's Athlete of the Year in 1971.

Trevino won the 1968 U.S. Open, only a year after joining the PGA Tour. From the time he joined the Tour until 1974 he dominated the competition, winning 5 of his 6 majors, four scoring titles, and most-memorably defeating Jack Nicklaus at the 1971 U.S. Open in an 18-hold playoff.

Trevino's golfing career was marked by both casual humor and extreme consistency, and he gained a reputation for his proficient swing. On five separate occasions - 1970, 1971, 1972, 1974, and 1980 - he won the Vardon Trophy, named for British golfer Harry Vardon and awarded each year since 1937 to the touring professional with the lowest stroke average in 60 or more PGA tournament rounds.
