Leda was the daughter of Thestius and the wife of Tyndareus. She has been known as the Queen of Sparta. Leda was seduced by Zeus when he came to her in the form of a swan. Leda gave birth to an egg. From it hatched the Dioscuri, the twins Castor and Pollux. With Zeus she ... had Helen and with Tyndareus she had Clytemnestra.

In the chronology of myth, Leda was a contemporary of Herakles, who set her husband Tyndareus on the throne of Sparta. Her sons, the Dioskouroi, joined the expedition of the Argonauts and the Kalydonian Boar Hunt, albeit at a very young age, while her daughters, Helene and Klytaimnestra, were wives of Trojan War heroes. In ancient Greek vase painting the generational gap between the sons and daughters of Leda is clearly represented--for where Helene is depicted hatching from the egg, her fully grown brothers appear standing witness. Later the Dioskouroi led an army to Athens when Theseus kidnapped their ten year old sister.

The type parameter facility permits the construction of general purpose data structures which do not overly constrain the nature of the values they will maintain. The story of Leda and the swan was extremely popular in both renaissance and baroque art, but Boucher has presented the subject with unerring pictoral instinct, obviously less concerned with sticking to the original story. Nowhere in the various accounts of Jupiter's seduction of Leda, wife of King Tydnareus of Sparta by the god taking the form of a swan, is there mention of a second female as beautiful as Leda herself. And although by their coupling, Leda and Jupiter would produce Castor and Pollux as well as Helen and Clytaemnestra, Boucher's painting hints at none of this. Unlike most representations of the scene, Cupid, the little god of love, is nowhere present. Nor does this craning swan invoke the usual menacing lust of the most powerful of the gods. Indeed the swan is depicted in a way which seems deliberately calculated to contradict the phallic symbolism of its outstreteched neck.

In addition to static binding, Leda supports the concept of dynamic dispatch which is sometimes referred to as dynamic binding. Dynamic binding allows the programmer to use a technique called polymorphism which is one of the more powerful features of object oriented programming. With static binding, type information for a variable or function is that declared at compile-time from variable declaration. Dynamic binding uses type information at run-time based on the information contained in the object itself. This gives Leda the ability to determine at run time which of several different functions to execute, based on differences in the type of value held by a variable.
