Lazio: Viterbo Founded

Viterbo, a town at Lazio's center, is a good base from which to discover these historic sites and their surrounding countryside. Lovely villas and gardens are found nearby. Three large lakes, Bracciano, Vico and Bolseno, are ... highly popular, particularly in the summer. They are ideal for swimming and simply relaxing in the open air.
Bordered by the Apennine Mountains to the east and the Tyrrhenian coast to the west, Lazio is filled with woods and pastures, hills and valleys, rivers and lakes, and as many as twenty-five nature parks and reserves. Much of Lazio’s landscape was formed by the eruption of four volcanoes that showered the area with lava. Lakes formed in the craters, and the soil, rendered fertile by the lava, nourished vines, olives, fruit, and nut trees. The volcanic activity ... left Lazio with hot springs, notably around Tivoli, Viterbo, and the world-class spa town, Fiuggi.

Industrial development in Lazio is limited to the areas south of Rome. Communications have influenced the position of industry, favouring the areas with the best links to Rome and those near the Autostrada del Sole (motorway), especially around Frosinone. Firms are often small to medium in size and operate in the building and building materials (Rome, Civitavecchia), paper (Frosinone), petrochemical (Gaeta, Rome), textile (Frosinone), engineering (Rieti, Anagni), automobile (Cassino), electronic and electrotechnical (Viterbo) sectors.
The area around Viterbo makes a good base for exploring not only Lazio and the heartland of the Etruscans, but ... Umbria and Tuscany to the north. Closer to Rome are the Castelli Romani and the vineyards of Frascati, or you may be tempted by the famous spas at Fiuggi. you get the idea.

Viterbo Founded by the Etruscans, Viterbo is one of Lazio's best-preserved medieval towns. A one-time papal residence, grand palaces and medieval churches are enclosed by ancient walls. Off the tourist route, it's easy to spend a pleasant day here.
Viterbo is an elegant, rich and lively small city, the most urban environment in the Lazio outside of Rome itself. It has always served as a retreat away from the capital: now filmmakers and writers, in the Middle Ages the Popes; not surprisingly then, it's one of the most consistently medieval towns in Italy.
