Lazio: Team
built 606 days ago
Remarkably, Lazio reflects its fans' sentiments. Unlike Roma or almost every other team in the Series A, Lazio's roster is devoid of black players. When it once imported one, Dutchman Aron Winter, he quickly left after the team's fans hounded him with chants of "nigger Jew." Rather suspiciously, nearly all of Lazio's current foreign imports hail from countries with fascist pasts—Chile, Argentina, and Serbia. The team's defender, Sinisa Mihajlovic, unabashedly trumpets his devotion to Slobodan Milosevic and his friendship with the Serbian paramilitary leader Arkan, whose band of thugs raped and pillaged their way across Bosnia. When Arkan was killed, Mihajlovic placed a wistful memorial notice in a Belgrade daily.

A virtually unwatchable Lazio dropped a must win game to lowly Empoli in a game that offered little hope. Lazio seemed devoid of ideas for long stretches of the match and worse, went through the motions in terms of effort. It’s not that there weren’t chances, there were many, probable enough to win, but the chances seemed to come in spite of the team’s play and not because of them.

Despite the grim tidings in most polls, Mr. Lazio's advisers insist that they have an endgame in place that will confound the critics and produce a stunning victory over the First Lady. In fact, the outlines of that strategy are already taking shape. For one thing, the Lazio team will use surrogates to step up assaults on Mrs. Clinton, even as Mr. Lazio's speeches and ads are carefully purged of attacks. And his aides insist that Mr. Lazio will soon reap the dividends of the agreement to ban soft money from the race. The deal was derided as a flop for its failure to resonate with voters, but Mr. Lazio's advisers maintain that it has laid the groundwork for the campaign's finale.

Perhaps many Lazio fans, buoyed by the winter market signings and the victories in the Coppa Italia and against Sampdoria last week had been fooled into believing that this team could turn things around. Perhaps many forgot about the team that took the field two weks ago against
