Lauryn Hill is an American hip hop singer, initially establishing her reputation as the most visible and vocal member of The Fugees. She was born in South Orange, New Jersey and began singing and acting at a very young age. Her acting roles included the TV show As the World Turns (as Kira Johnson in 1991), and the film Sister Act II: Back in the Habit, the latter of which showcased her vocal abilities. Though the Fugees had originally formed in 1988, Hill's membership was disrupted by her acting and her education at Columbia University. The Fugees' first album, Blunted on Reality, was much-hyped but fell far short of expectations. This was followed by The Score, a multi-platinum selling album that established all three Fugees (Hill, Pras Michel and Wyclef Jean) as international successes.

Lauryn Hill did a Nina Simone at the Vibe Music Festival. Some of you might know......It was Nina Simone's style to chastise her band on stage while performing. She would tell them to stop and start over. She would tell them that they were off key when she felt that they were. Which female artist has influenced Lauryn more than just about any other? You got it: NINA SIMONE!

Though Lauryn Hill is considered a shoo-in, music-industry author Henry Schipper cautions, "Beware of Nashville! Historically, they have voted formidably as a block." Even without this Grammy feather in their caps, the Dixie Chicks could accrue an impressive nest egg. "This is the hottest new country act in a long, long time," VH1's Wayne Isaak says. "Even though they're pop-leaning at times, they're smart to retain their country appeal. They're country first, whereas Shania Twain felt pop within five minutes."
