The Almighty Latin King Nation (ALKN) started in the New York City prison system at Rikers Island. They have grown from a prison gang into a street gang in recent years. Presently, the Latin Kings are one of the fastest growing street gangs in New York City; they actively recruit young people from the age of 8 and up. Frequently, the recruitment takes place within schools and is directed to both males and females. Factions of this gang have spread throughout New York City correctional facilities and are now a strong gang within all five boroughs.

Assembled by award-winning documentarian Jon Alpert, Latin Kings: A Street Gang Story is primarily a "biography" of the notorious New York gang's ex-leader, Antonio "King Tone" Fernandez. Under house arrest at the time of filming, Fernandez insists that he has experienced an epiphany, and that upon his release he intends to transform his gang into a peace-loving, community activist group. His words are contrasted with the violent activities of the Latin Kings during the final years of the 20th century, as captured on police surveillance tapes. In 1994 the Latin Kings, the largest and most powerful street gang in New York, became the Latin King and Queen Nation. They claim to have abandoned their criminal past and to be following in the footsteps of the Black Panthers and the Young Lords.

In 1986, Luis Felipe, calling himself "King Blood", it is said that he was born and raised in the streets of Chicago, Illinois in a Latin King neighborhood, he looked up to the Latin King members. He then left Chicago and moved down to Connecticut. He got himself into trouble with the law and while in prison took the Connecticut King Manifesto and added a few of his own writings and prayers.
