By then he was ... a dedicated Latin King. Kingism kept him off crack, gave him something to live for. Soon he became bodyguard to King Teardrop, the nation's No. 2 man and later one of the government's prize catches. After the federal indictments cleaned away much of his competition, Tone took over. During this period, tension was building between the Kings and another prison-and-street group called the Ñetas. As Ñeta leader Green Eyes told me later: "Everybody was running around 'cause my guys thought Tone was going to get to me first, and his guys thought I was going to get to Tone first."
