Latin America was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. Columbus wanted to find a short way to eastern Asia. When Christopher Columbus returned to Europe people were excited about the discovery. The pope drew the Line of Demarcation in 1493 because he did not want Spain and Portugal to fight over which country had the right to claim the new land. Everything on the west side of the line belonged to Spain and everything to the east belonged to Portugal. The Spanish took over Mexico easily.
The School in Latin America is based in Buenos Aires and has an office in Santiago. Sites located outside these two capital cities seek to capture some of the diversity of this region. Students interested in a high degree of immersion are strongly encouraged to consider these more provincial sites where there are often few or no other U.S. students. They will find these locations ideal for achieving greater integration into the local community and for becoming involved in a variety of activities.

HIV/AIDS is not confined to groups such as gay men, injecting drug users or sex workers - in Latin America or elsewhere. Yet people continue to associate the epidemic with these groups, which are already highly stigmatised by people who have moral objections to their lifestyles.

In all Latin countries, the attitude toward time is less rigid than among North Americans and a 30 minute delay should not be a surprise. In fact, among close associates, it is recommended that, when setting times for appointments, ask "la hora inglesa, o la hora espanol?" This means "the English hour" (meaning "Promptly at the time specified?")or "the Latin hour" (meaning "If I say 7 o’clock, don’t be surprised if I don’t show up until 7:30 or even later").
