Laser: Treatments

Studies conducted by the manufacturers showed that the laser is as safe and effective as a high-speed drill for removing dental decay and preparing a cavity for a filling. The manufacturer's study indicated that fewer patients needed anesthetic for pain. Any inquiries regarding this method of cavity treatment should be directed to your dentist, who can provide you with patient labeling including risks for the specific laser.

Currently manufactured excimer lasers use a computer system that tracks the patient's eye position up to 4,000 times per second, redirecting laser pulses for precise placement. After the laser has reshaped the cornea, the Lasik flap is repositioned over the treatment area by the surgeon. The flap remains in position by natural adhesion until healing is completed.

[One] research summary concluded that low level laser therapy was effective in reducing pain and morning stiffness for those with rheumatoid arthritis. But there were no differences in the treated subjects in overall disability, swelling or range of motion. And no data was available for effects beyond 4-10 weeks of treatment.

The systemic effect of therapeutic laser light has been described by many researchers, such as Braverman [E20], Rochkind [E21], Airaksinen [E22], Inoue [E23] and Schindl [E24]. Essentially, a systemic effect is one such that treatment of a given complaint at one site will ... tend to affect a similar complaint elsewhere. It is therefore important to observe caution in interpreting the result of studies in which parts of the test person's/ /animal's body has been treated by laser and another part of the same body has been used as a control, especially in small animal studies.

Currently manufactured excimer lasers use an eye tracking system that follows the patient's eye position up to 4,000 times per second, redirecting laser pulses for precise placement within the treatment zone. The average power for each pulse is usually in the milliwatt range [5] Typically, each pulse is on the order of 10–20 nanoseconds.
