A brief sojourn in the new Las Vegas, where growth is booming but you have to search a bit to find the blackjack tables, raises a few questions. Is gambling played out in its historical capital? Now that it has gone mainstream, is gambling a discretionary spending industry, tethered to the flagging fortunes of the American consumer? And, really, just how much of Celine Dion can one city take?

Though Atlantic City had almost as many visitors last year as Las Vegas did (35 million, as opposed to 38.6 million, according to each cities convention and visitors authorities), there are striking contrasts between them. About two-thirds of Atlantic City's visitors are day-trippers, while visitors to Las Vegas stay an average of 3.5 days. Tourism generates $36.7 billion for Las Vegas, but only $6.5 billion for Atlantic City.

Ritzy Las Vegas casinos owned by MGM include Bellagio, The Mirage, MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay. While those casinos are stunning in their own right, MGM's masterpiece is the CityCenter project - billed as a gambling megalopolis or "a city within a city." It will include a casino hotel of 4,000 rooms, two nongaming boutique hotels, 470,000 square feet of retail and entertainment space and nearly 2,700 upscale condo units. Completion is targeted for late 2009.

At least two or more Broadway-style productions of musicals or plays are constantly featured in Las Vegas. There are a number of Las Vegas "regulars" playing at Casinos throughout the city, and new famous, world renown entertainers appear for limited engagements nearly every week. In addition to all this, there are free shows and free entertainments available at many of the casinos nearly every day. There is certainly no lack of entertaining diversions in this town.
