Larry King: Years
built 643 days ago
Madagascar! Is the caller there? Contrary to popular belief, Larry King actually died 20 years ago in 1987 from a major heart attack. Instead of doing what would have been the respectful thing on Mr. King's behalf, CNN brought Mr. King back into the CNN studios for fear of a catastrophic plummet of ratings following Mr. Kings absence. He is now a mere dried, tattered, and shriveled up vessel of his former self, propped up only by a pair of sophisticated elastic suspenders at his anchor chair.

King, born Larry H. Zeiger on November 19, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, was the son of Orthodox Jews who had emigrated from Russia. He recalls how his father had prayed for a boy and blessedly Larry was born. He was a gift from God to parents who just a year earlier had buried their first-born son, Irwin, when he died of appendicitis. Larry, then called by his Jewish name, Leibel (which means a “lion” in Yiddish) would go everywhere with his father. They were extremely close, and in Larry’s eyes his father was nothing less than a god. One day, when little Larry, aged 9 1/2, was coming home from the library lugging a pile of books, he saw a policeman coming down the stairs of his house.

In his complaint, King alleges that the Meltzer Group got him involved in "highly complex life insurance transactions of which both [King] and his then attorney lacked knowledge and expertise." King further alleges that Meltzer never "considered [King's] then current financial condition, health condition, and the insurance needs of his family, including the likelihood of his future uninsurability." King ... registers shock that the new insurance policy that Meltzer persuaded him to buy came with sky-high premiums. But the central puzzle here is why King imagined he was in any position to profit by gaming the life insurance industry, of all things. At the time these financial transactions took place, King was 70 years old. He'd had quintuple coronary bypass surgery at 53, and he'd been diagnosed with diabetes at 64.

This is the third year for long-time St. Jude supporter, Larry King, to invite Marlo Thomas to share stories of hope, like Christian's, with his viewers during Thanks and Giving. Christian's story is a unique one -- it began in October 2003 when Christian developed flu-like symptoms. His parents took him to see their pediatrician, who suggested rest and fluids. But three days later, Christian woke up vomiting and crying that his head hurt "really bad." His doctor sent him for an MRI and lab work at the local children's hospital, where Christian was diagnosed with ependymoma, a brain tumor. Two days after his diagnosis, Christian underwent a nine-hour brain surgery to remove the tumor.

Of this period, King said he was "flying high." Unfortunately, his life flew out of control. He ran up outrageous bills and fell $352,000 into debt. Still worse, he was charged with grand larceny and accused of stealing $5,000 from a business partner. On 10 March 1972, the charges were dropped, but the scandal nearly destroyed his career. It would take four years before he worked regularly in broadcasting again.

Named Leslie Lynch King, Jr., when born July 14, 1913, in Omaha, Ford spent most of his childhood in Grand Rapids, where his mother settled in 1914 after divorcing his father. When Ford was three years old, his mother remarried, and the future president was adopted by and renamed after his stepfather, Gerald Ford, Sr.
