built 626 days ago
larry Larry King, the friendly bumbling TV interviewer, goes for grits and chicken wings with rapper Snoop Dogg and schools him on the specifics of an "Arnold Palmer" (no gin but a little juice). Instead of being weird/awkward, it ends up being sort of weird/awesome. Also, Snoop invents a new mocktail. more

It seemed like a comedy sketch meant to parody the unique Larry King interviewing style but last night satire met reality when King interviewed several transgendered people on his show. Because Larry didn't change his typical interview style a bit, the show came off as both extremely surreal as well as unintentionally hilarious. Here is a portion of the transcript from King's August 10 show which melodramatically begins with this introduction:

With more than 44 years in broadcasting and over 44,000 interviews to his credit, King is one of the most respected personalities in the industry. King, who has been described as the “Muhammad Ali of the broadcast interview,” has been inducted into five of the nation’s leading broadcasting halls of fame. Both his radio and television shows have won the George Foster Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting. King has ... won 10 CableACE Awards for Best Interviewer and for Best Talk Show Series.
King Although Larry King appearances occur most often on the air, King has ... worked in publicity and journalism. He penned articles for Esquire magazine, including an interview with Joe Namath, and also worked in PR at a Louisiana racetrack. With his extensive background, a Larry King appearance will be engaging and educational.
Larry King interviewed the still hugely popular Donny and Marie Osmond on his show last week. Unexpectedly, King announced that Marie’s 16-year old son had entered a rehab facility. Both were stunned at the announcement, and Donny admits to being “very upset…and thought it was unfair.” But, in Hollywood retrospect, all is forgiven and Donny now understands that the tabloids would have run the story and says, “Larry King did Marie a favor.” Does Donny’s public apology keep Marie’s chances on Dancing With the Stars alive?

As a talk-show host, Larry King suffers from the common malady of a softball interviewing style. He is laid-back, and hardly controversial. Scoundrels love him because he won't come out with any surprise uppercuts, or at worst won't conduct a fair interview.
