Larry Hagman is best known--throughout the world--for his role as J.R. Ewing, the unscrupulous heir to a Texas oil fortune, on the long-running Dallas, the blockbuster nighttime soap opera which still defines the genre. Less well-known is the actor's earlier work in a variety of media.

In his acting debut, Larry Hagman had only one line. It never got out. Instead, the actor stared dumbly at the audience. If he has been tongue-tied in the 40 years since that grade-school pageant, the occasion has gone unrecorded. Today Hagman likes to talk the way Texans like to spend. Except on Sundays, when there is a rule of silence at his Malibu spread.

When his mother moved to New York City to continue her Broadway career, Larry Hagman continued to live with his grandmother in California. Just a couple years later, his grandmother died and Hagman would go back to living with his mother. In 1945, at age fourteen, while attending boarding school, he began drinking heavily which would lead to serious health problems later in life. In 1946, Hagman moved back to his hometown of Weatherford, Texas, where he worked as a ranch hand for his father's friend's company. Upon attending Weatherford High School, he was drawn to drama classes and reputedly fell in love with the stage in particular with the warm reception he got for his comedic roles.
Larry Hagman November 21, 1980 and August 23, 1995 are two dates Larry Hagman will never forget. On the first, over 350 million fans in 57 countries were glued to their tv sets to find out who shot J.R. On the second, Larry received a liver transplant that took 16 hours and saved his life. Feeling better than he had in years, Hagman worked on two projects simultaneously: Ken Follett's The Third Twin and Mike Nichols' Primary Colors.

Larry Hagman From All Movie Guide: The son of Broadway actress Mary Martin, Larry Hagman was born in Fort Worth, Texas. After his parents divorced, he lived with his grandmother in California until the time of her death. Hagman, 12 years old at the time, then returned to his mother who was working on the Broadway stage. After attending Bard College in Anandale-on-the-Hudson for one year, his own early efforts at breaking into showbiz began at the Margo Jones Theatre-in-the-Round in Dallas, and soon after in The Taming of the Shrew at the New York City Center. While working as a cast member on his mother's hit show South Pacific, Hagman took up residence in England and ended up staying there for five years. During that time he joined the U.S. Air Force where he found time to produce and direct several theater productions.
