Two other noteworthy early laptops were the Sharp PC-5000 and the Gavilan SC, announced in 1983 but first sold in 1984. The Gavilan was notably the first computer to be marketed as a "laptop". It was ... equipped with a pioneering touchpad-like pointing device, installed on a panel above the keyboard. Like the GRiD Compass, the Gavilan and the Sharp were housed in clamshell cases, but they were partly IBM-compatible, although primarily running their own system software. Both had LCD displays, and could connect to optional external printers. The Dulmont Magnum, launched internationally in 1984, was an Australian portable similar in layout to the Gavilan, which used the Intel 80186 processor.[1]

-- A DVI output, a digital connection that offers enhanced picture fidelity, is an option for many modern laptops. DVI jacks feature a series of small holes in two horizontal rows that link directly to the TV's matching DVI jack. (There are several varieties of DVI cable, so users should bring their PC and TV manuals to the electronics store for help in choosing the appropriate cable.) The sound travels separately, usually from the laptop or computer's stereo mini-jack to the TV's RCA plugs. Connection cables often combine both the DVI plug and a stereo jack. Some TVs with a DVI connection ... may have digital audio connectors that require a digital audio cable -- a combination that offers superior picture and audio quality. TVs that have an HDMI input rather than a DVI input require a cable with a DVI jack on one end to connect to the computer and an HDMI jack on the other end to connect to the TV.

The market of gaming laptops now has a new “player” - Rock Xtreme XL8. Every year the demand for these laptops is growing. The price of such laptops do not stop gamers (which usually exceeds $3000). In order to get the highest performance the notebook Xtreme XL8 is equipped with the most powerful quad-processor Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 (by the way, it is representative of processors for desktop computers).

With the advent of dual-core processors and perpendicular recording, laptops are beginning to close the performance gap with desktops. Intel's Core 2 line of processors is efficient enough to be used in portable computers, and many manufacturers such as Apple, Lenovo and Dell are building Core 2 based laptops. Also, many high end laptop computers feature mobility versions of graphics cards, eliminating the performance losses associated with integrated graphics.

Not quite as groundbreaking as Wang Computers' word processor, XtremeNotebooks is offering the first Quad-Core Intel processors in laptops at a price of over $10,000 per unit fully stocked. The XTreme 917 has a Core 2 Quad Q6000 processor with dual NVidia processors and almost 1TB of hard drive space, which means that unless this has a car battery inside, you'll be looking at some dismal on-the-go use life.
