The survivors' only hope now is to lure the Permians into the house and burn it down, sending them back to the land of the dead. Monica, accepting that she must sacrifice three years of work and make a fresh start, helps to spread the polymer paint and other flammable materials about the house. The Permians arrive, and the Doctor acts as bait to lure them into the stone room. Tulung sets the corridor on fire behind them, and the Doctor clambers through the hole into the earth room, jams the door shut behind him and flees with his friends, trapping the Permians inside the blazing house. The monument burns to the ground behind them, putting an end both to Brett's obsession and to the Permians. Any remaining hybrids will soon die without the energy from the Permians to sustain their unnatural forms.

The nine levels of the Aztec underworld were called Mictlan, the Land of the Dead. A wandering soul walked for four years down the first eight levels, which were extremely difficult and taxing to cross. The lowest of the nine levels was Mictlan proper, a vast cave filled with skeletons and ruled by the Lord and Lady of Death. Before the final burial of a nobleman, a chunk of jade would be placed in the jaw - this would be offered to a great jaguar at the gates of Mictlan instead of the man's own heart. When Sayadio arrived in the land of the spirits, the spirits fled from him in fear. He recognized Tarenyawagon, who had lived on earth as Hiawatha, the great teacher of the Five Nations. Tarenyawagon now was the spirit master of ceremonies, and he was as compassionate as he was when he was on earth. Tarenyawagon told Sayadio that the spirits of the dead were about to have a great dance festival, in which his sister would take part. As soon as the formed the dance line, Sayadio recognized the spirit of his sister. When he went to embrace her... she disappeared.

Former Pittsburgher Nicotero, whose first job in the industry was on "Day of the Dead" as part of makeup wizard Tom Savini's team, was special effects makeup supervisor on "Land of the Dead." And he's now doubling as "Dead" tour guide for visitors, including Rodriguez, who first met Romero yesterday.

The Aztec god of death was Mictlantecuhtli, Lord of the Land of the Dead. This cup was skilfully crafted, considering the difficulty in carving greenstone. The Lord of Mictlan stands with his forearms raised. The headdress he wears is a typical design for the rulers of the dead. As shown here, Mictlantecuhtli is usually presented with a morbid face despite a fleshy body. Some traditions claim that Mictlantecuhtli is fully fleshed and merely wears a skull mask; others hold that his body is in a state of partial decay.
