Armstrong: The Legend After suffering stress fractures in his shins during his first New York City Marathon last year, Lance Armstrong vowed to never enter the event again. This year he broke that vow and posted an even better time.
Lance Armstrong was born on September 18, 1971 in the town of Plano, Texas. As a child, Lance participated in a wide variety of youth sports. Athleticism came naturally to him and at age 13 Lance won the Iron Kids Triathlon. A few years later he became a professional triathlete. A triathlon consists of swimming, running, and cycling, and it did not take him long to figure out which one he was the best at; cycling. When Lance was in high school he would take long rides on Saturdays that would often take him to the Oklahoma border where he would have to call his mom to come and pick him up.

He was named after Lance Rentzel, a Dallas Cowboys wide receiver. His father left his mother when Lance was two years old. His mother later married Terry Keith Armstrong, who adopted Lance in 1974 at the age of 3.[30] Linda has been married and divorced four times. Lance has since refused to meet his birth father and has described his stepfather as deceitful.[31]
Armstrong began his sporting career as a triathlete competing and winning in adult competitions from age 12. In the 1987-1988 Tri-Fed/Texas ("Tri-Fed" was the former name of USA Triathlon), Armstrong was the number one ranked triathlete in the 19 & under age group; second place was Chann McRae, who later became a US Postal Service Cycling teammate and the 2002 USPRO National Champion. Armstrong's point total for the 1987 season was better than the five professionals ranked that year. At 16 years old, Armstrong became a professional triathlete and became the national sprint-course triathlon champion in 1989 and 1990 at age 18 and 19, respectively.

Kicking off 2002, Lance opened many eyes at Milan-San Remo, finishing in the lead group for the first time after working for George Hincapie throughout the event. he followed that effort at the Criterium International, where a third-place showing in the time trial stage left him runner-up by less than one second to Alberto Martinez. Next up came two World Cup events the Tour of Flanders and Liege-Bastogne-Liege where the Texan again worked on behalf of Hincapie. This was followed by the Amstel Gold Race, a favorite event that Lance has targeted for years and now possesses three top-four finishes in (fourth in '02, after seconds in both 2001 and 1999).
Armstrong met his wife, Kristin (Kik) Richard, in June 1997. They were married on May 8, 1998, and had three children: Luke, born in October 1999, and twins Isabelle and Grace, born in November 2001. The pregnancy was made possible through the use of sperm Armstrong banked three years before having chemotherapy and surgery.[32] The couple filed for divorce in September 2003.
