Click for larger image Almost three months after winning an unprecedented sixth consecutive Tour De France, Lance Armstrong doesn't look that different. He looks a little tired from a recently heavy travel schedule and has a little stubble on his chin, but that laser-like focus is always there in his slate blue eyes. 33 just one month ago, Armstrong is widely regarded as the world's best endurance athlete who is now at the pinnacle of success as a Grand Tour rider. In fact, a recent Sports Illustrated fan poll voted Armstrong "All-Time Greatest Sportsman", ahead of Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and many other great names from the world of sport.

Lance Armstrong wants to set the record straight. "Ashley Olsen and I are strictly friends," the world-renowned athlete told us. "We have hung out amongst other friends, and she strikes me as a nice, smart lady." Meanwhile, his ex, Sheryl Crow, is hitting back at a Life & Style report about her supposedly being upset.
Lance ... took part in a more varied schedule in '02, competing in a handful of super-demanding World Cup events in support of teammate George Hincapie, leading up to his traditional Tour preparation events. The pre-Tour results were as solid as usual second at Criterium International and fourth at Amstel Gold prior to victories at the Midi Libre and Dauphine Libere. Lance followed up the Tour with top-five finishes at the Championship of Zurich and the two-man Time Trial GP Eddy Merckx. A sixth place showing at the San Francisco Grand Prix concluded a long season.
Carmichael has turned this meticulous attention to detail into a 24/7 tool, by devising an interactive internet-based computer analysis, called ‘Virtual Coach’, to support Armstrong wherever he is in the world. Armstrong logs on and inputs his training results for that day, which allows Carmichael to adjust and prescribe the exact programme for the next day’s session. Armstrong downloads this and off he goes.
Lance qualified for the 1989 junior world championships in Moscow the following summer. Amateur competition would prove valuable for Lance in more than the obvious ways. Not only was he able to hone his cycling skills, but the experience acquainted the shy, all-American kid from Plano with life outside of Texas and enabled him to make important connections in the cycling world. By 1991 he was the U.S. National Amateur Champion, and he remained an amateur competitor through the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona.
Lance was frequently accused of using illegal performance enhancing drugs, and subsequently tested. He always tested negative for any drug use. He once called himself the most frequently tested athlete in the world. Do you think that most athletes are using illegal substances to enhance their performances?
