Lance Armstrong pedaled his way to victory, winning his seventh Tour de France competition today. Rain fell on the final leg of the bicycle world's most important annual race, causing organizers to stop the clock as the cyclists entered Paris. Armstrong was declared the official winner, even with eight laps of the Champs-Élysées left to complete. The 3,600 km (2235 mi) trail runs through France, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Spain, and ends in Paris. The two other major bike races that join the Tour de France in making up the Triple Crown of Cycling are the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) and the Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain).

Lance Armstrong won his fourth straight Tour de France yesterday proving yet again he is the master of one of the most punishing tests in all sports. With many among the thousands of fans waving U.S. flags, Armstrong moved within one victory of the Tour record of five titles. He is the winningest American in the event, having passed Greg LeMond's three titles.

In a stunning performance, Armstrong dominated the 1999 Tour de France, winning four individual stages and wearing the yellow leader’s jersey for most of the race. He finished first by more than seven minutes overall and became just the second American ever to win the Tour de France. Greg LeMond captured the race three times in the 1980s and early 1990s. Armstrong repeated as champion in 2000, 2001, and 2002, each time finishing the race more than six minutes ahead of his closest competitor. In the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Armstrong earned a bronze medal in the time-trial event.

The seven-time Tour de France winner probably could have gotten into the 26.2-mile race based on his celeb status — as Katie Holmes reportedly has — but instead he did it the old-fashioned way: qualifying with an impressive time of two hours, 46 minutes, 43 seconds at the New York City Marathon last November. (The Boston Athletic Association, which organizes the race, is currently negotiating for a national TV broadcast.)....Turner Sports and the NBA are strengthening their relationship next season, with Turner set to take control of programming, marketing and technical operations of NBA TV, the league’s cable channel, as well as the league's websites, including nba.com and wnba.com. Armstrong's cycling comeback began in 1998 when he finished fourth in the Vuelta a España. In 1999 he became a household name with his first Tour de France win, which included 4 stage wins. He beat the second place rider, Alex Zülle, by a margin of 7 minutes 37 seconds. However, the absence of Jan Ullrich (injury) and Marco Pantani (following drug misuse allegations) meant that Armstrong had not yet proven himself against the biggest names in cycling. Stage wins included the Prologue, stage 8, an individual time trial in Metz, an Alpine mountain stage win on stage 9, and the second individual time trial on stage 19.
