Now Lance has a new challenge - to mount one of the greatest comebacks in sports history. So far he is well on his way. Wearing a United States Postal Service jersey, Lance is again earning victories in the U.S. and in the European racing circuit, making his story even more compelling and inspiring. It is a story not only of athletic performance, but ... one of great human courage.
Soon, Armstrong chose to focus on cycling, his strongest event as well as his favorite. During his senior year in high school, the U.S. Olympic development team invited him to train with them in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He left high school temporarily to do so, but later took private classes and received his high school diploma in 1989. The following summer, he qualified for the 1990 junior world team and placed 11th in the World Championship Road Race, with the best time of any American since 1976. That same year, he became the U.S. national amateur champion and beat out many professional cyclists to win two major races, the First Union Grand Prix and the Thrift Drug Classic.

With his primary goal accomplished, Lance concluded his 2002 quest with a few more races on the schedule. Third at the Championship of Zurich, then fifth at the GP Eddy Merckx alongside teammate Viatcheslav Ekimov and finally sixth at the San Francisco Grand Prix. With this, Lance wrapped up another banner season - and now thoughts turned to joining the legendary quartet of Hinault, Anquetil, Merckx and Indurain, the only riders with 5 TdF victories. With the centenary version of the Tour being celebrated in 2003, people are already asking "Then what? Can Lance make it 6 in a row?"
Armstrong was athletic from the beginning. He enjoyed biking and swimming but did not do as well with football. In the fifth grade he won a distance running race. A few months later he joined the local swim club where he quickly advanced. He would ride his bike ten miles to early morning practices, then ride to school, and ride back again to swim in the afternoons.

In 1996, he ... returned to racing, winning the Tour de Luxembourg, the Rheinland-Pfalz Rundfarht in Germany, and the Cascade Classic in Oregon. He took fourth place in both the World Championships in Holland and the Tour de Spain. He won a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

In 1991, Armstrong competed in his first Tour DuPont, a long and difficult 12-stage race, covering 1,085 miles over 11 days. Though he finished in the middle of the pack, his performance announced a promising newcomer to the world of international cycling. He went on to win another stage race, the Settimana Bergamasca race, in Italy later that summer.
