Lana Turner’s performance opposite John Garfield in THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE needed to be toned down to satisfy the censors back in 1946. Fortunately they had nothing to say about this fiery ruby ring.
During the 1950s, Turner starred in a series of films that failed to succeed at the box office, a situation which MGM attempted to remedy by casting her in musicals. The first, Mr. Imperium, was a flop, while The Merry Widow was more successful. She gave a widely-praised performance in Vincente Minnelli's 1952 film, The Bad and the Beautiful , and later starred with John Wayne in the adventure film The Sea Chase. She was then cast in the epic The Prodigal, but the film and her performance in general were not well received. After the 1956 film, Diane, MGM opted not to renew her contract.

In 1948 Lana filmed The Three Musketeers, her first Technicolor picture. Cast as Lady de Winter, she especially enjoyed the test of playing opposite Vincent Price's Cardinal Richelieu. "I studied him, and it challenged me, and I began to try things I never knew I could do," she said. "I found my own little touches-a certain sly look, the flap of a glove, a tilt of the head." She was allowed to improvise and create moments that weren't originally in the script. The artistic freedom and exquisite costumes made it one of her favorite performances.
